This event has ended.

FROSCH&CO presents Unfold, Munich based artist Julia Kuhl’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery.

Julia Kuhl’s watercolors continue to investigate the relationship between line, color, texture, and text. In her most recent series, collage segments disrupt the line patterns, creating another element of tension.

The new drawings are less controlled, more playful and chaotic. Kuhl subverts the friendly domesticity of home textile patterns, instead superimposing them as grid-like structures at odds with the reality they attempt to organize and contain. Collage and text interrupt the patterns, sometimes gently reshaping them, other times actively breaking or unravelling them. The artist builds up layers of dissonance through strands of camouflage and clash.

Words and phrases — gathered from myriad sources — like cenotaph, don’t blame the passengers, smote, or remedy provide commentary on our current times. Demure, cursive script and rounded lettering present an approachable veneer that the words often subtly and occasionally aggressively undermine. Common phrases, taken out of context, begin to seem ominous. Double meanings abound. Viewers are invited to free-associate and create their own narratives, taking these works as hints and prompts.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Julia Kuhl grew up in New York and now lives and works in Munich, Germany. She holds a BA from Hunter College and an MA from the University of Applied Sciences, School of Design in Hamburg, Germany. Her drawings have been included in numerous exhibitions and are represented in private collections in the US and Europe. Kuhl was Artist in Residence at Sammlung Prinzhorn, Heidelberg, Germany.
