Whether deriving inspiration from past masters, the view out the window, or an interior with still life, Stephanie Franks’s works weave together multiple threads, finding connection in the push and pull of their relationships. Her drawings take cues from visually perceived reality, while her collages are unabashedly about color. In her paintings, the “drawing” and divisions of space relate to the perception of the outside world while the color is pure inven-tion, creating its own unity.

Franks’s color flies free, giving voice to her intuited inner reality, while her drawing investi-gates, in more formal ways, the world she sees with her eyes. On the one side, her interior language of color and on the other, the perception and notation of the exterior world through the language of drawing: this is the conversation, the unique gift of Franks’s art.

Stephanie L. Franks lives and works in New York City and less so in the East end of Long Island, NY. New York venues where she has shown include Berry Campbell Gallery, Jason McCoy Gallery, the National Academy Museum, the Painting Center, along with previous solo exhibitions at the Bowery Gallery. She has exhibited throughout the U.S. and internation-ally including at the New Bedford Art Museum, Paul Thiebaud Gallery in San Francisco, the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery at Haverford College, the Higashi Hiroshima Museum in Japan, and the Royal Academy in London. Her most recent solo exhibition (October, 2021) was at the Borzello Gallery at Knox College in Illinois. Franks has been a recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Grant and twice, a Mercedes Matter Award Recipient along with having had residencies at Yaddo, the Djerassi Foundation, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She has taught at Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, Kansas City Art Institute and the Chautauqua Institute. She received a BA from Barnard College, an MFA at Queens College and studied at New York Studio School and Yale Norfolk.
