Matthew Marks presents an exhibition of new works by Vincent Fecteau.

Fecteau’s first one-person exhibition in New York in eight years includes twelve new sculptures constructed from painted papier-mâché and other materials such as burlap and raffia.

Rather than relying on preliminary sketches, Fecteau constructs his works in real-time using a process that is both additive and subtractive. “A thought comes to me, and I follow it,” the artist has explained. “It leads to something else, which leads to something else, and I keep on going until the obsession stops.” Guided by intuition, he produces sculptures that can be reminiscent of objects seen in the world. The artist, however, insists on the abstract nature of his works: “In the end I’m really interested in the energy or intention beneath the surface as opposed to the deconstruction or understanding of form in art-historical or other terms.”

Vincent Fecteau (b. 1969) lives and works in San Francisco. His work was featured in the 2002 and 2012 Whitney Biennials and the 2013 Carnegie International in Pittsburgh. His one-person museum exhibitions include the Art Institute of Chicago; the Kunsthalle Basel; the Berkeley Art Museum; CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco; the Vienna Secession; and the Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany, among others. Fecteau received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2016.
