Colleen Franca’s first show at Bowery includes recent paintings from Maine, Long Island and Florida, as well as Portugal and Italy – where she was an artist-in-residence – and Brooklyn, where she resides. The artist’s intimately-scaled paintings, notable for ther vital patterns and nuanced color, include still lives, interiors and portraits of her family.
“As a perceptual painter, I strive to see things simply,” Franca notes, “to create a quiet harmony so I can focus on what lies underneath all the complexity.”

In the portraits the artist seeks not just a likeness but her subject’s inner spirit. Her landscapes are suffused by sunlight: “It is always the light that draws me in as a plein air painter, and keeps me searching for things that are not immediately obvious.”
