This event has ended.

The gallery presents Jeremy Long’s second solo Bowery exhibition, featuring paintings of domestic life that range in scale from the epic to the intimate. The artist’s depictions of his own family fill the largest canvases with an intensity and eloquence reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch painting. In a second body of smaller, more abstracted works, his forms subtly overlay the narrative in rhythmically constructed spaces.

The artist describes his work as “an attempt to expand a figure or object from within so that it can have a profound effect throughout the space of the picture.” Long’s nod to Cubism and Hans Hofmann’s plasticity moves beyond modernism; his exceptional talents for “realism” play continuously against colorfully abstracted shapes, patterns and textures. As Stanley Lewis notes in the exhibition catalog essay, “Jeremy has reversed the ‘everything at once’ thing. Now his abstracted versions are his dominant reality.”
