This event has ended.

In Claiming Space artist Marilyn Banner continues her exploration of the earth’s forms and energies through the rich medium of encaustic. The initial inspiration for this work was her strong visceral response to lichen, to its variety of colors, textures, and shapes, and the way it proliferates on the surface of stone and bark. The colonies grow next to each other and on top of each other. They respond to their environment, to light and moisture in the air. They live together in concert, each species claiming space, and all co-existing peacefully.

Banner works with encaustic paint, a mixture of pigment, beeswax, and damar resin. The pigmented wax is built up, layered, carved into, and manipulated to mimic the textures and flow of lichen, tree bark, and the small forms that grow nearby. Some of her paintings look much like what she sees, but always with a focus on the subject matter’s abstract qualities. Others are entirely abstract, the result of the artist’s internalizing those qualities, trusting her intuition, her experience with encaustic, and following the energies that flow through the creative process.

Marilyn Banner has exhibited her mixed media work in over 30 solo and 100 group shows across the US and abroad. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including Hebrew Union College in NYC, Sheppard Pratt in Baltimore, and the Embassy of Costa Rica in Washington DC. She is the recipient of ten residency fellowships to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and was awarded a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation VCCA Creative Fellows Grant. Her work was featured in “Encaustic Art in the 21st Century” by Anne Lee and E. Ashley Rooney. “Claiming Space” is the artist’s ninth solo show at Ceres Gallery.
