This event has ended.

The Painting Center presents a solo exhibition of new paintings by Alix Bailey in the Main Gallery. The large paintings depict a world which she observes within the confines of a six by six foot space in her studio, where figures bathed in diffused light gaze out from chairs or couches and the curve of an empty fireplace is repeated in the curve of a shoulder or a fold in fabric. Patterns on rugs rhyme with elbows or knees (or a cat when he makes an impromptu appearance). Groupings of plants and objects on the mantel form a parallel world to the animate one below. Bailey paints this part home-part studio not in order to describe an objective reality but in order to discover a world that is invented through close engagement with her subject. In the catalogue for the show John Mitchell writes,” Unlike a commissioned portrait for example, the imagery in Alix’s paintings is almost a by-product of her process. Look at the abstract qualities of these works – the repetition of form, the relationship of paint to ground, drawing to color and the light that the paintings make.”

Also on view are a more quickly painted group of small figures and heads. A catalogue featuring paintings from this exhibit as well her 2018 exhibit will be available at the gallery. Alix Bailey has shown her work in New York City, Hudson, NY, Connecticut, and Italy.
