This event has ended.

Tina Kim Gallery presents The Unseen Professors: Leo Amino (1911-1989), Minoru Niizuma (1930-1998), and John Pai (b. 1937), a group exhibition curated by John Yau. The exhibition focuses on the sculptures of Leo Amino, Minoru Niizuma, and John Pai, three Asian artists who were born respectively in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea between 1911 and 1937 and immigrated to America. All three artists eventually relocated to New York City, where they worked and taught for many years in leading institutions such as Cooper Union, Pratt Institute, and Columbia University. Despite their belonging to different generations, their teaching careers overlapped for more than a decade (1964-1977), during which time a generation of artists associated with Minimalism and site-specific art gained much of the art world’s attention.

This exhibition aims to highlight the significant accomplishments of these innovative sculptors and the alternative bodies of work they developed in the face of Minimalism and the dominant paradigm of avant-garde art that developed starting in the mid-60s. By re-examining this period through significant works by Amino, Niizuma, and Pai, the exhibition wants to introduce a new generation of viewers to these distinguished but underrepresented Asian-American artists who vigorously pursued their own trajectory.
