Jaither West (b.1988) is a self-taught artist working and living in Philadelphia. Whether influenced by 80s hip-hop culture or passerby’s on a commute, West densely renders details from memory or selects relevant images researched online.

From famous personalities such as Michael Jackson to breakdancers in the streets, West merges history with marginalized moments in the present day. After months of intense research, the artist methodically paints both historical scenes and current socio-political events onto canvas. The latter allows for West to fully experience daily activities, all while paying homage to important historical figures before him.

An avid breakdancer and student of Taekwondo, West intertwines his passions to reflect a richer and more personal experience for the viewer. From South Korea to 1980s B-Boy culture, Wests’ paintings are a clear representation and tribute to his hometown of Philadelphia.
