“They both listened silently to the water, which to them was not just water, but the voice of life, the voice of Being, the voice of perpetual Becoming.”

― Hermann Hesse

Van Der Plas Gallery presents ”Finding Water” by local and international artists. Both the permanency and the distribution of the first element, Water, are currently in question.

For the artist, Water represents the flow of inspiration, the giving and receiving of ideas and the constant change that is inherent to any creative process. Water is movement, it is an inevitable cycle of rebirth and renewal, and it is this harmony that every artist and creator searches for. Perhaps above all else, Water is the very fabric of our lives, interwoven into our bodies and into the world around us. It is what allows for our existence and the existence of the world as we know it. Unsurprisingly, Water flows through our legends and stories, through our religions and through our history, in every corner of the globe. It is a powerful force, both literally and spiritually.

The importance of Water as a natural resource is unambiguous, yet our interactions with this element continue to be fraught with hypocrisy and neglect. Politically, access to Water is treated as a given privilege for some while it is denied to others. Its essence has been polluted, and we are all, directly or indirectly, guilty of turning a blind eye to our lack of responsibility in handling this element upon which we all depend absolutely. The element of Water calls into question our lifestyles, both individual and communal. It points directly at our politics and business practices, highlighting irresponsibility and abuse. As the dire circumstances of our oceans come into focus, we are realizing that our environmental impact is utterly unsustainable.
Juxtaposed against contemporary corruption, Water’s symbolic purity emphatically lives in our imaginations as the ideal of hope, grace, and peace. While Water’s physical properties are corrosive, its spiritual idealism urges us into new and positive directions.

Whether, like rain, Water’s ideal will wash away the pollution caused by our ignorance and greed, or whether it will only shimmer as a puddle of rebuke to our stubbornness in the face of crisis is up to us as we gaze into the face of Water’s abundant spiritual purity and pervasive physical degradation.
