Derek Eller Gallery presents Enigmatics, an exhibition of recent ceramic works by Jiha Moon in our project room. Layering traditional Asian-inspired porcelain painting with contemporary Western allusions, Moon’s masks and vessels speak to cultural displacement and miscommunication. A self-described “cartographer of cultures and an icon maker of fictive worlds”, Moon mixes Lichtenstein paint swipes with lotus patterning, and renders familiar brand logos in jade green or lapis lazuli. This frenetic and sometimes humorous collision of references calls into question deep-seeded assumptions about historical narrative and representation.

Jiha Moon (born 1973, South Korea) lives and works in Atlanta, GA. Moon will be included in the upcoming “State of the Art 2020”, a survey of contemporary art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. She has had solo exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia, Atlanta; The Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville, TN; James Gallery of CUNY Graduate Center, NY, among others. She has been included in group shows at Kemper Museum, Kansas City, MO; Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; Asia Society, New York; and The Drawing Center, NY. Moon’s mid-career survey organized by the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and Taubman Museum toured more than 10 museum venues around the country through 2018.
