This event has ended.

440 Gallery is happy to announce that the gallery will re-open to the public for visits on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. To celebrate, we are proud to present Event Horizon, the 6th solo show of original works by mixed-media artist Karen Gibbons.

This show’s title is a nod to an astronomical term that refers to the edge of a black hole—a boundary from which nothing can escape. As such, Karen Gibbons’s artwork is an invitation to reflect on our own “Event Horizon”.

If Karen Gibbons’s recent work could be boiled down to a single theme, it might be transformation. Multiple images merge and emerge to bring up myriad associations. Color, line and composition lend coherence as the viewer is swept up in a complex saga that alludes to emotions, cycles and rebirth.

The dreamlike abstractions that Gibbons creates are crafted out of collage, paint and drawing materials that are mounted on boards and, often, found objects. Gibbons gracefully navigates the concept of change through the use of grouped components that offer the potential for re-arrangement. With optimism and spirit, Gibbons suggests that the viewer consider a “choose your own adventure” as images can be observed from many different perspectives.

Karen Gibbons is a mixed media artist; she lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. A proud mother, author, yogi and therapist, Gibbons has an MFA from Hunter College and has shown her work extensively in New York City and across the U.S.
