mh PROJECT nyc presents Look ‘n Lick, a site-specific collaborative installation by Janice Sloane and Kazumi Tanaka.

These Two artists and good friends, Janice Sloane and Kazumi Tanaka are here to share their affinity for hair, cream, cakes and the effects of the virtual world through a mixed media approach. Their collaboration is a dialogue that evolved through meetings, text messages, emails and photos sent back and forth of cream heads, Victorian drawings and hair. In this exhibit, each piece was inspired by the other’s.

Janice Sloane is a mixed media artist who lives and works in New York City. Her work deals with the body, it’s process of transformation, impermanence, and decay. She explores the head and it’s complexities through sculpture, drawing and digital mediums. Janice has exhibited at Honey Ramka, La Plataforma, Barcelona, SPRING/BREAK ART SHOW, The Parlour Bushwick, X Teresa, Mexico DF, El Centro de La Imagen, Mexico DF, White Box , Neue Galerie Graz, ZKM Center for Art and Media Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany, DESTE Foundation, Athens, Greece, Museo de Arte Carillo Gil Mexico DF, Museo Universitario del Chopo Mexico DF, Brooklyn Museum among other spaces in USA, Europe and Mexico. Her work has been reviewed in selected publications such as Hyperallergic, White Hot Magazine, Mileno Supplemento Cultural, Mexico DF, The Herald, Mexico DF, NY Times, Ethik & Unterrich, El Periodico del Arte and Harpers Bazaar, Mexico Her works are in several private collections in New York and Mexico, the C-Collection in Vaduz, Lichtenstein, and the Neue Galerie Graz, Austria.

Kazumi Tanaka was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1962. She emigrated to the United States in 1987, where she has developed her work for decades. Employing a wide range of natural materials, Tanaka creates intricate and conceptually complex works that often deal with connections between the ephemeral nature of memory and the tangible mementos of history. Her work has been exhibited at Kent Gallery and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. Tanaka received a 2017 Tiffany　Foundation Grant. In 2018, she completed a year-long residency at Manitoga, The Russel Wright design center in Garrison, NY. She has participated in 2019 Venice Biennial in Italy and 4th Kunming Art Biennale in Yunnan, China.
