This event has ended.

Mast Books presents Fantasy Rhythms, a solo exhibition of new ceramics by Eric Preston Alexander. This ongoing body of work is comprised of small scale painted and etched ceramic totems, bowls and vases. Hand-built works, riffing on traditional forms combine a vibrant color pallet of brightly painted banding and symbols, with lyrically poetic and topical texts.

Subverting the tradition and culture of ceramics within the domestic landscape, Alexander explores the notion of an object’s ordinary utilitarian nature by rendering it into a platform for inward facing ideas rather than for physical use.

Linguistic games and idioms investigate questions of fate and serendipity while reflecting an interest in rhyme schemes and popular phrases, and how they might inform certain populist logic and modes of thinking. To these are the addition of blithe symbolism - jovial flowers, skulls, clocks, the Yin Yang, and basketballs, that act as a separate reinforcing layer of meaning and visual allegory, which springboard the work through a pop-cultural vernacular.

Eric Preston Alexander is a multidisciplinary artist born in Hartford, CT in 1989. He lives and works in New York. Alexander’s work has been included in exhibitions at Entrance Gallery (2018); 8-Ball Community (2018); Superchief Gallery (2017); The Living Gallery (2017); and Con Artist (2017).
