This event has ended.

La MaMa Galleria presents a body of painting, a collection of new oil portraits by Mark Tambella. A body of painting seeks to capture the energy and movement of sitters at rest. Through mark-making, color, and composition, he amplifies their personalities to encourage a connection with viewers. In addition to exploring his sitters’ psychology, Tambella’s paintings suggest a spiritual curiosity.

Tambella engages subjects from his community in the East Village, including workmates, neighbors, and friends, articulating his personal relationship with them as a painter. He combines elements of his expressionist landscape and still life processes to compose portraits that delve beyond likeness alone. His expressive use of paint enables him to create enigmatic spaces and settings to interact with his subjects. With gestural marks and lively abstracted forms, Tambella often imagines figures into ambiguous situations where they engage in energetic group activities. Tambella’s mysterious spaces invite the viewer to meaningfully question and embrace quotidian relationships between sitter and painter. These indeterminate settings position the viewer to participate in the work in the same manner that Tambella communes with his subjects.

Mark Tambella is a New York artist. Along with his paintings, he is well-regarded for his set and production design. His paintings have been featured in exhibitions at La MaMa Galleria and the John Davis Gallery.
