BFA Visual & Critical Studies presents The Visible Surface, an exhibition of work by the BFA Visual & Critical Studies class of 2020, curated by program graduate Margo Greb (BFA VCS 2017).

As a sailor on my ship I wish always for the surface to remain below me.

As a diver I urge the surface to greet me.

As a sculptor I force into presence new surfaces.

As the sun I show you only my third surface, the visible one.

Our relationship to a surface is defined by what we do. As creators and critical thinkers, the surface is an endless and shifting concept, one which can be explored and questioned from every angle.

In The Visible Surface, 10 fourth-year students define their relationships with a multitude of surfaces. Using media like installation, video, crochet, felting, silicone casting and augmented reality, they explore the moments before the surface, fabricate new surfaces to indulge in and to push against, and question and delve into already existing surfaces to reveal what lies beneath.

Artists include Jacob Blauner, Joey Gonnella, Lily Guan, Esther Jeong, Max Kornfield, Carol Li, Giulia Lisi, Mikayla Smith, Stella Song and Taylor Zarif.
