This event has ended.

The Red Passion Suite is a series of paintings, describing a relationship between two people who got back together— for a second chance. This work is inspired by my trip to Europe under the Hohenberg grant to study art and create a body of work.

In Venice I saw “The Legend of Saint Ursula” by Vittore Carpaccio, at the Gallerie dell’Accademia. Quite amazed by the entirety of his vision, it was here that I decided to attempt my own modest series. I have used the landscapes from Northern Spain as a backdrop, combined with select Etruscan figurative sculptures as muses.

For this grant I decided to immerse myself in a study of art which stretched further back in history. Most of what I saw was site specific, beginning with Paleolithic cave art in Northern Spain up and through the late Renaissance paintings of Italy.

The Hohenberg Travel Award is awarded annually to a New York Studio School student who has completed at least 4 semesters of full-time study. The grant is a cash prize which creates the opportunity for its recipient to travel to Europe and study works of art in person. Upon return, the recipient mounts an exhibition at the New York Studio School and presents a lunch time lecture to the current student body, describing how their travels and seeing the major works of art affected their practice and opened up their visual language in new and exciting ways.
