This event has ended.

‘All the images of carnival are dualistic; they unite within themselves both poles of change and crisis: birth and death (the image of pregnant death), blessing and curse (benedictory carnival curses which call simultaneously for death and rebirth), praise and abuse, youth and old age, top and bottom, face and backside, stupidity and wisdom.’ — Mikhail Bakhtin

Exhibition:

In a mode of celebration, we’ve gathered works from new emerging and established artists whose spirits awake us to whims of mystery, creative freedom, and amusement. It is Van Der Plas Gallery’s first All Art+ exhibition of the year – and we are reuniting with our artistic impulses. The ‘carnivalesque’ sends us into a frenzy, upending hierarchies and outdated social arrangements. We’re confusing norms with new interpretations. It is ‘the world standing on its head’ according to Mikhail Bakhtin, Russian linguist and critic. We are all creators here, and we join together under the auspice of art.

“Publican” and “Publican in Blue” are two paintings by AJ Dungan that gaze towards us with masked faces. Merging polarities, he brings together visions of abstraction and figure. The two could be friend or foe, however it may be, they gather here to transport us to another world. Peter Thomas, a multimedia artist inspired by nature, invites us in with sculpted clay figures who are almost alive. Ross Pino’s “Man on Balloon” is a memorable cipher, perhaps holding the crown of the party. David “Big Dutch” Nally’s mind-mapped montages taunt ignoble cultural tropes. In the exhibited works, “Not Free Advice” and “The Universe is a Cul-De-Sac,” he uses colored pencil and ink creating paths to social satire marked with inverted airplanes and flip-flopped lucky horseshoes.

In this exhibition, faces peer at us with critical guises, and chaotic visual structures become metaphors for class and order. We look beyond the surfaces of traditional portraits; we express new and imaginative ways of communicating; and most importantly, we rejoice in a creative moment with our fellow artists, becoming muses to one another.

Many of these artists are showing for the first time in a gallery setting. If you would like to learn more about them, please visit the links below:
