This event has ended.

Onishi Gallery presents KAEDE: Five Winds, a group exhibition featuring contemporary calligraphy artists CAN Miura, HOUSEKI Seiji, BIHOU Iwai, TOSHI Furuya and KAORI Kasahara. For many years, this calligraphy group, KAEDE, has frequently attended the same training sessions, camps and social gatherings focused on exhibiting at several traditional Japanese calligraphy (shodo) exhibitions and found that we were in agreement about the spirit and future of shodo (Japanese calligraphy) which led to the creation of KAEDE. With this exhibition, KAEDE strives to take active steps towards the future; to expand its activities internationally.

When people try to create something, they will reflect on what is inside of them. I think creatively using time like this brings color to life. Writing calligraphy (shodo) is an irreplaceable way of life for me. Luckily I have received guidance from many gifted mentors and have been able to continue calligraphy for a long time. I am very happy to be able to hold this exhibition with fellow members that I have studied together with.

I am thankful for the teachers that I have worked with, and hope we can show everyone how fun calligraphy is. – BIHOU Iwai / Exhibiting Artist

Years of devotion to the practice of Japanese calligraphy have led each artist to develop their unique style and expression, which is on display. In this exhibition, you will experience five new yet traditional winds blowing from Japan. – Yoko Maki / Curator
