“Warmth and Promise” Exhibition

Warmth and Promise presents a small selection of artists depicting intimacy through representational art. Each artist provides a window into their own life, whether through images of themselves, their peers, loved ones, objects, or surroundings.

During this exceptionally solitary time, there is a particularly strong yearning to connect. We might notice an amplified desire on the part of the viewer to enter these unique worlds, and perhaps even take up residence. Through the sharing of intimacies, a simultaneously vulnerable and empowering endeavor, the hope remains that art will continue to lead the way in expanding our points of view.

Anne Buckwalter, interested in gender roles and inequalities, references female sexuality in her paintings of interiors which are informed by her Pennsylvanian Dutch Heritage. Clarity Haynes paints revealing nude torsos of women, trans, and gender non-conforming people as well as collections of personal, often handmade, objects in the form of alters. Oscar yi Hou portrays tender and introspective depictions of himself and those he is close to. Doron Langberg renders images of friends, family, and lovers, with a focus on quiet, daily interactions in queer relationships. Bailey Scieszka shares with us her alter ego, Old Put, who is influenced by mass culture and society at large.
Anne Buckwalter received a BFA from the Tyler School of Art, in Philadelphia, PA (2010) and an MFA from Maine College of Art, Portland, ME (2012). She has exhibited at venues including the Freedman Gallery at Albright College, Reading, PA; Galerie Youn, Montreal, Canada; Monya Rowe Gallery, New York, NY; Alexander Berrgruen, New York, NY; and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME, to name a few. In 2018 she was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant. She lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.

Clarity Haynes (b. 1971 McAllen, TX) received an MFA from Brooklyn College, NY in 2007. Haynes has exhibited work at venues including Denny Dimin Gallery, New York, NY; Kniznick Gallery at Brandeis University, Waltham, MA; Mana Contemporary, Jersey City, NJ; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA; and the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., to name a few. In 2018 Haynes received a Pollock-Krasner Award and was a New York Foundation for the Arts Artist Fellow in Painting. Haynes lives and works in New York, NY.

Oscar yi Hou (b. 1998, Liverpool, UK) is a student at Columbia University, New York, NY. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Royal Academy, UK; the Asia Society, New York, NY; and The Gallery, Liverpool, UK, amongst others. He will be included in forthcoming shows at Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles, CA and Carl Freedman Gallery, Margate, UK. He lives and works in New York, NY.

Doron Langberg (b. 1985, Yokneam Moshava, Israel) received a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA (2010) and an MFA from Yale University, New Haven, CT (2012). He has exhibited at venues including Yossi Milo Gallery, New York, NY; 1969 Gallery, New York, NY; Carl Freedman Gallery, Margate, UK; The Schedules Museum, Berlin, Germany; Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, NY; American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, NY; LSU Museum of Art, Baton Rouge, LA; and the Leslie Lohman Museum, New York, NY to name a few. His work is in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Philadelphia, PA and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Providence, RI. Langberg lives and works in New York, NY.

Bailey Scieszka (b. 1989) received a BFA from Cooper Union, New York, NY in 2011. She has exhibited at Larrie, New York, NY; Stems Gallery, Brussels, Belgium; the Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, CA; Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, MI; While Columns, New York, NY; and Galerie Maria Bernheim, Zurich, Switzerland, to name a few. Scieszka lives and works in Detroit, MI.
