This event has ended.

Allouche Gallery presents “GLORY | IN BLK” featuring 15 original works by the Brooklyn based contemporary artist Malik Roberts (b. 1990, Brooklyn, NY). The solo exhibition focuses on the artist’s signature style of deconstructed portraits, 10 canvases and 5 works on paper, which explore the relationship between visual culture and reality today.

Malik Roberts is a painter and multimedia artist who often works with images and conventions recognizable from the media, reframing his appropriated source material to reveal the absurdity of everyday life. Some of his controversial and contemporary subjects will include a black man with curlers in his hair, Malik’s version of Lady La Rue, and another man in a ski mask, uncovered and exposed to society’s scrutiny.

While Roberts’ visual language combines influences of modern and pop art, such as Snoop Dogg and a black Madonna, the artist’s sophisticated compositions provoke engagement rather than astonishment, inviting the viewer to consider the impact of visual media on the consumption of ideas in the Digital Age.
