This event has ended.

Lesbian Matters is a participatory art project that explores the personal and material effects that are collected through our lives. These personal collections of postcards, trinkets, letters, photographs, and buttons serve as reminders of life’s queer moments. What are the objects that make up your life?

For an upcoming exhibition at Trestle Gallery as part of The BRIC Biennial, Brooklyn-based artist Phoenix Lindsey-Hall is collecting objects, stories, and personal artifacts that mark lesbian life. This will create a collective snapshot that reflects a contemporary lesbian objecthood.

This call for materials is inclusive and open to anyone especially those identifying as lesbian, butch, queer, non-gender binary, trans, or believes their voice should be represented in this collective examination of a contemporary lesbian life. In this way, we are preserving a living moment of lesbian history in real time.

Phoenix Lindsey-Hall is a Brooklyn-based mixed media artist. Lindsey-Hall holds a MFA in Photography from Parsons The New School of Design in 2012 and a BFA in Photography from Savannah College of Art in 2004. Lindsey-Hall’s current solo show, Never Stop Dancing at Victori + Mo Gallery is a large-scale installation of 49 porcelain disco balls in honor of the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. She has also held solo shows at Christopher Stout Gallery (Brooklyn, NY) Brown Gallery at Duke University (Durham, NC) Gallery Aferro (Newark, NJ) and shown in group shows in various galleries in New York, NY, Philadelphia, PA, Louisville, KY, Savannah GA and in Pingyao, China. She is New York Art Residency and Studios(NARS), Studio Residency Recipient, and a participant in the Emerge Program with the Aljira Center for Contemporary Arts in conjunction with Creative Capital. Her artwork centers on violence in queer communities.

Jesse Bandler Firestone (b 1992, NY) is an independent curator working between South Florida and New York. Their curatorial work looks to expand exhibition making into a collaborative practice that can bring artists, non-artists, peripheral social networks, and institutions into dialogue with one another. Firestone treats art as a nexus to open a wide range of topics and touch on issues surrounding consciousness, identity, and our fast-approaching future. Firestone moved to New York in 2016 upon being selected as Trestle Project’s Curator in Residence ‘16-’17, is currently pursuing their MA in Curatorial Practice at SVA, and is the assistant curator at the Miami-focused, artist-run fair Satellite Art Show. Firestone’s writings have been published in Sleek Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, and D/Railed.
