This event has ended.

Neumann Wolfson Art presents the opening of Houses of Walls, a solo exhibition featuring a new body of work by Justin Samson.

For his eighth solo show, Samson will create an immersive environment of his recent interior paintings and sculpture, furthering his process of installation based art. As a collage inspired artist, Samson’s new paintings are based on loosely appropriated vintage, interior images and styles blended together in a distinct and cohesive fashion. Samson works in many mediums, determined by the concept of the project and the location of its creation. In Houses of Walls, Samson presents a fantasy vision of the nostalgic, domestic ideal and intends for viewers to imagine themselves into each individual painting. The scale is conducive to that experience, and the diptych and triptych formats create a juxtaposition and conversation within the piece.

In a shifting, often impacted ratio of psychedelic, Op Art, wall-to-wall collage, thrift-store finds, craft pop, counterculture and sci-fi references, Samson tempers the tendency toward visual overload with an interest in making sly points about display and cultural otherness. Samson’s paintings seem like hallucinations, or dream-like environments that are intended to be “collages” reflecting the zeitgeist. Saturated found images in old interior design books and magazines are continuously being discovered by Samson and used as source material for his work, creating a collage-oriented strangely familiar world.

Born in Connecticut in 1979, surrounded by the varied influences of pop culture and underground art, Samson’s interior paintings employ an aesthetic that recycles the random consumer debris that fills our culture, leaving the viewer mesmerized by the eclectic American artistic experience. Not unrelated to 1980’s Pattern and Decoration, Samson’s layering of decorative materials adds up to something quite more than what he started with; they read like icons of a long record of past styles, transfigured and filtered through his personal memory.
