This event has ended.

M. David & Co. presents New Narrative Now, a survey of twelve painters that use figuration to create personal narratives that speak to the struggle of the individual’s place in our complex contemporary society.

The work of Todd Bienvenu, Ashley Cooper and Jeffrey Moribito is full of humor and a lush use of paint with a pop sensibility of color that subverts the superficial reading of our everyday lives.

Farrell Brickhouse, Carlo D’Anselmi, Mary DeVincentis, Mark Milroy combine the imagery of the individual often times set in nature with literary, religious and art historical references to raise questions of social and moral responsibility. They each have an open handling of paint and a more subdued palette, allowing the beauty of the drawing complexity of the narratives to show, providing room for multiple interpretations by the viewer.

At the heart of the works Staver Klitgaard, Rachel Rickert, Grace Roselli, Clintel Steed and Natasha Wright’s work, we find a questioning of sexuality, gender and race. The use of paint, whether expressionistic or more deliberate, reinforces an imagery of in some cases overt and in other instances and underlying anger the stories these artists are telling.

Since ancient times, storytelling has been fundamental to the organization and definition of our values. The artists in this exhibition, while each different in the stories they tell and how they tell it, all share a common desire to the find a sense of self in a society that’s increasingly fractured by an overload of information that operates at a speed which makes it nearly impossible to plant one’s feet firmly on the ground.
