Arthur Frank “The Circus”
Umbrella Arts
This event has ended.
The exhibition features 23 giclee prints taken at performances of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the Big Apple Circus between 2011 and 2018, including some from the final performances of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
The modern circus was started by the Englishman Philip Astley over 250 years ago by presenting feats of horsemanship together with acrobats, rope-dancers, jugglers and clowns. Once transported to the United States, the circus evolved into a uniquely American form of entertainment as a traveling tented version of prior circuses and became the major form of entertainment in the United States by the end of the Nineteenth Century and into the Twentieth Century.
