Baruch College’s Mishkin Gallery presents the exhibition The Aesthetics of Learning, featuring a digital recording of a performance by Joseph Beuys and Henning Christiansen, four photographs by Catherine Wagner, and seven etchings by Juan Downey.
What does learning look like? What does learning sound like? How are aesthetics a conduit for rethinking the ways in which knowledge and power are formed?
This exhibition brings together works from the Mishkin Gallery collection that target the infrastructure of education itself. The works, each from a different decade, question the formation of institutional frameworks through three distinct methodologies put forward through listening, looking, and communicating. They invert the passive reproduction of knowledge and instead promote active learning. They are part of Baruch’s own history and reflect the school’s belief in supporting art in the public realm.
What we uncover in these works are distinct ways of challenging knowledge production and thereby power, both in the university and beyond. A series of public programs focusing on how we might unlearn will offer spaces of contemplation and collaboration throughout the duration of this exhibition.
Mishkin Gallery Unveils New Exhibition Resource Center
The Mishkin Gallery will also debut the Exhibition Resource Center (ERC), a satellite library within the gallery and an online research guide that encourages deeper engagement with the exhibition program through related readings. The project highlights scholarly materials expanding on specific topics and artists represented in the presentations at the gallery.
