Ulterior Gallery presents Fragments, an exhibition of works by Joe Goode, Donna Sharrett, and Mamie Tinkler. The exhibition features pastels on paper by Joe Goode, fabric collages by Donna Sharrett, and watercolor paintings by Mamie Tinkler. Although these three artists work with different materials and ideas, the works on view demonstrate a kinship in their use of fragmented moments, reconstructed to create a new meaning.

Goode’s two works from his Torn Sky series, created from his observation of the sky in Los Angeles, capture the texture and color of the sky by transferring it into irregular forms, fragmenting the original pristine painting. Although created on a flat plane, these asymmetrical sculptural shapes mimic the ever-changing sky and the endless reshaping of clouds, which all morph again based on the viewers’ distinct vantage point. Sharret’s mixed-media assemblages, constructed from clothing and items collected, donated or passed down over the years, act as a form of remembrance for those we’ve lost, preserving our fading traditions, histories and memories. As reflected in her distinct choice of materials and intricate technical practice, her works bridge the divide between traditional crafts and fine art. The watercolor paintings that Tinkler creates are based on photographs that she stages with found objects such as mirrors, ceramic figurines, and vintage magazines. These dramatically lit still life scenes recall theatrical stage sets, rendered obliquely. The artist’s precise yet visceral observation of the tableaus amplifies their specificity.

Joe Goode was born in Oklahoma City, OK in 1937 and moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend the Chouinard Art Institute. Goode currently lives and works in Los Angeles. His works can be also found in numerous museum collections internationally, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery, London, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
