This event has ended.

Wayfarers presents the first New York solo show of Virginia-based artist Carole Garmon. The exhibition will feature Garmon’s recent drawings and wall sculptures.

From the artist: The Victorious Underdog (and other favorites) came about in a dreamy sort of way where portals of past and flashes of future collide within the soundness of sleep; those sought-after sentiments when nonsense makes sense. In this space, this time, cartoons, critters, cartography, and cartouche converse in comical ways that meld both the personal and the universal. Fictional relationships that have influenced my life such as Scout and Jem in To Kill A Mockingbird, Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts in a ballad by Bob Dylan, Flipper, Olive Oyl, and Heckle and Jeckle are major “players” as I become an interlocutor of my past.

The result is a multitude of images and vignettes, icons of sorts, that elude departure point and destination. However, within each drawing, the scribed line from Garmon’s training as a cartographer (in another lifetime) is significant, “securing the scene and locking locale” while the sculptures in her exhibition function as both souvenir and travelogue.

Carole Garmon holds an MFA (1996) and a BFA (1993) in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has taught at the University of Mary Washington since 1998 and is a recipient of their Outstanding Young Faculty Member Award. Garmon’s research acknowledgements include the accessioning of select images and research materials on Rembrandt into the Rijks Museum Library in Amsterdam, Holland, and participating in a BBC2 documentary on Rembrandt’s painting The Night Watch. The segment is part of the larger series The Private Life of the Masterpiece. She was one of two Americans chosen to participate in the international exhibition Inspired By Rembrandt, commemorating Rembrandt’s 400th birthday. In addition, her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, at venues in Richmond, VA, Washington, D.C., San Antonio, TX, Detroit, MI, Lima, Peru, Amsterdam, Holland, and Berlin, Germany.
