Lisson Gallery presents ‘The Rest’, a group exhibition exploring figurative painting and the approach to image making by a generation of artists including Van Hanos, Allison Katz, Jill Mulleady, Jeanette Mundt, Nolan Simon and Issy Wood. In an era where images are created and exchanged without premeditation or hesitation, and reproductions are ubiquitous, the artists in the show destabilise the traditional notion of a singular aesthetic identity. Their use of imagery wrestles with the history of figuration, whether resuscitating historical trends to then thwart them or finding altogether new avenues to engage. This fresh approach to painting pushes our expectations and challenges the staid perceptions about formal figuration, representation and what the medium “should be”.
