This event has ended.

“Coding Coincidence” is a solo exhibition of paintings by Evan Venegas.

Evan Venegas is a painter who works from memory. He considers himself as a receptor - constantly gathering information and cues from his everyday life. Venegas has always been aware of this hyper-vigilance - which he recalls suppressing in his youth. Now it has become an enriched source of inspirations reflected in his paintings. Venegas calls the input as “emotional data” which he carefully memorizes and analyzes during his painting phase. Venegas’s work is a psychological map , or a composition of codes derived from his emotions and memory.

In this exhibition , Venegas is presenting two very distinctly different painting styles.

The paintings from the Lost Grid Series are representations of his understanding and his explanations on how he interacts with the physical realm. He extracts these visual cues being inspired by architecture, fashion , travelling and other objects encountered in his daily life. However, identifying the underlying subject matter is not of much importance, furthermore he aims to provide viewers a glimpse of his mind and perceptions at his state of heightened self awareness.

Contrast to the Lost Grid Series , the Day Map series were inspired upon interaction with his newborn daughter. The Day Map is a delicate watercolor composition of shapes and color - each representing the “emotional data” he collects through his interaction with his daughter. The Day map series can be regarded as a record of the intimate telepathic communication between the two.

Evan Venegas lives and works in Ridgewood Queens, NY and was a 2017 recipient of the Sustainable Arts Foundation Award. Notable group exhibitions include “Round It Up!” at Muriel Guépin Gallery, New York, NY and “STREET LIFE (gruppeudstilling)” at Galerie Wolfsen in Aalborg, Denmark. Venegas was honored with the Community Supported Arts & Design Award in 2015. Public Collections include Hospital for Special Surgery and New York Presbyterian Hospital.
