This event has ended.

Figureworks presents Fedele Spadafora’s Stars & Stripes. This series of oil paintings reflect on a magical period in American television during the 1960’s and 70’s when broadcasts such as the bubbly wholesomeness of The Lawrence Welk Show (pictured) competed with provocative series exploring science fiction and changing family values. A youth during this era, Fedele notes, “When making these paintings, I asked myself this question: as the son of immigrant parents, how did I learn to be an American and the answer is television.”

This subject remains a reoccurring theme in his work and, as a realist painter, Fedele uses his classical training to capture his television subjects in a fresh palette, diverting from the saturated color screens that were becoming standards in American households at that time.

Fedele, a first generation Italian-American, was raised near Detroit. He received his BFA from Michigan State and then moved to Prague, where his work was influenced by the baroque style. Returning to the states a number of years later, he settled in NYC and continued his studies at the Art Students League, studying portraiture with Nelson Shanks and anatomy with Frank Porcu.
