NURTUREart presents Voices Through Lenses, a group exhibition featuring analog film photography created by fifth grade students at P.S. 147 with Felicita “Felli” Maynard, NURTUREart’s 2018–2019 Artist-in-Residence.

During this in-school arts program Maynard, an artist and film-based photographer, introduced students to the history, technical foundations, and concepts of analog film photography. The students learned about the components and construction of various types of cameras and the method by which they capture light to produce photographs on film. After learning the basic mechanics involved in this process, they learned about composing images by varying light and dark, adjusting focal point, and carefully framing their subjects. NURTUREart provided students with film cameras so they may conduct their own experiments. The photographs installed in this exhibition are the products of those experiments.

In a world of digital photography, smartphones with built-in cameras, and applications like Instagram, these students have learned the technological foundations on which this everyday medium is built. They have examined the methods and structures of photography and have developed a more nuanced understanding of how they are able to use the medium to translate the world around them into artistic photographs—how they are able to express their voice in film.

Felicita “Felli” Maynard is a New York City based interdisciplinary artist, student, and educator. They received their BFA from Brooklyn College, with a concentration in film photography. As a First generation Afrolatinx-American, their work uses photography to investigate and explore identity, gender, history, and the black body. They are interested in the concept of rewriting history by means of their work.

NURTUREart’s In-School Artist Residencies provide students the opportunity to collaborate with professional artists during the school year and regularly visit NURTUREart’s exhibition series. Students learn technical skills that lay a foundation to develop creative projects that voice student and community interests. Students additionally gain skills in contemporary art making, visual literacy, and art appreciation.
