This event has ended.

Coined by the influential art critic Clement Greenberg in his essay, Modernist Painting, 1961, the phrase “integrity of the picture plane” has come to denote how an artwork’s two-dimensional surface functions in the modern period. The exhibition brings together works on paper by artists such as Sol Lewitt and Richard Serra who treat the edges of the picture plane as elements that define, enclose, compress, or otherwise provide compositional structure to printed or drawn works on paper. Robert Mangold, Martin Puryear, and Edda Renouf use line to define or emphasize the edges of form, while Sean Scully’s transparent aquatint washes dissolve edges and blend areas of muted color.
