This event has ended.

frosch&portmann presents atomic, the latest series by New York based Patricia Satterlee. This is the artist’s first solo show with the gallery.

The intimate-sized paintings in atomic— each bearing that same title followed by a number— are a series of earthly and minimal compositions in a selective color palette, portraying the currents and emotions of natural objects. Satterlee’s work balances on the cusp of abstraction and representation, conveying not only the exterior of the formations but the vitality that they embody. Displaying interconnectivity through each painting, the highly layered compositions depict variations of the same original shape, resulting in motifs vaguely reminiscent of hand-fans, stacked on top of rock formations in stunning balancing acts.

Sharp articulated silhouettes against a sleek pale-grey background, the final paintings appear minimal and clean, seemingly unapparent of the intense layering/eliminating process. The artist’s medium is the highly pigmented water-based vinyl paint Flashe, resulting in the unique velvety and matt finish.

The paintings in atomic are portraits of a hedgerow landscape, an observed world making contact through earth, water, and sky. A hedgerow is a city state of flora and fauna, micro environments within the landscape. A wonderland.

Patricia Satterlee works in Brooklyn, NY. She has shown at The Kitchen, Valentine Gallery, frosch&portmann, M55 Gallery, and Norte Maar in New York, Gold /Scopophilia* in Monclair, NJ, Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, the Museum of Comtemporary Art and the Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) in Washington, DC among others. Her work has been included in national and international exhibitions and has ben reviewed in the New York Times, Washington Post, Hyperallergic, and other online publications.
