at Step Sister

Step Sister presents a two person exhibition of new works by Adriane Connerton and Stefan Hoza. Connerton’s paintings of posing figures wearing moisturizing face masks and tanning examine the convergence of “wellness” and social media. Distorted by cosmetic treatments the individuals become abstract versions of their own projected image. The trolls that populate Hoza’s canvases position themselves as amalgamated avatars, taking influence from art historical references, Scandinavian folklore and the likeness of neoliberal economists. The oral and literary history of trolls is set against the context of current interpretations of “trolling”. The multiple forms of these characters appear in various environments as babies, coworkers and villains.

Adriane Connerton live and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014 and her BFA from New York University. Recent exhibitions include Flower Sermon, Yui Gallery, New York, NY; Codec, Catbox Contemporary, Ridgewood, New York; and My End is Legend, Bretigny-sur-Orge, France.

Stefan Hoza lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art & Design and attended the Yale Norfolk Summer School. Recent exhibitions include Skin Like a Salamander, Wick Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, Page NYC, NY, Finally Buff at Secret Recipe Gallery, Los Angeles, CA and Arturo Bandini Art Fair in Los Angeles, CA.
