This event has ended.

A new photography exhibition at the Queens College Art Center explores time and change in two cities: New York City and Bologna, Italy. Presented by international artist and Bologna native Simone Caprifogli, the show explores how nostalgia can reveal the essential character of the places we inhabit.

“Out of Time, Senza Tempo,” a selection of photographs of two seemingly different cities – Bologna and New York City – makes surprising connections about life in different parts of the world. Shot in black and white, the photographs evoke a timeless quality, suggesting that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Simone Caprifogli moved to Greenwich Village in 2005 and immediately began photographing his new neighborhood. Over the years, as his adopted neighborhood changed, Caprifogli was struck not only by the reality of gentrification and neighborhood change, but also by the effect that our changing surroundings have on our memories and narratives. Caprifogli’s work explores the element of nostalgia that shapes our perceptions and understanding of communities across the globe. Caprifogli said, “My hope is to represent scenes that capture the enduring spirit of each city, superseding the constant march of time and relentless change and finding the eternal heart of what each place really means to its residents.”

Simone Caprifogli lives and works in Flushing, New York. As a member of the Communications department at Queens College, he does graphic design and photography. He has been an avid photographer for over 20 years.
