This event has ended.

Almine Rech presents the first exhibition of Marcus Jahmal at Almine Rech New York. This will be Jahmal’s second show with the gallery. On this occasion, the artist will present a selection of new paintings and will transform the gallery’s west exhibition room with a site-specific installation.

Marcus Jahmal is an artist born and raised, and still based in Brooklyn, New York. His paintings depict domestic scenes and landscapes built from memory and imagination. In his images, which are both theatrical and quietly intimate, Jahmal showcases exuberant brushwork and his particular strengths as a colorist. As the art critic Roberta Smith wrote in the New York Times, Jahmal’s “main love is color, which he uses stunningly, but he exploits everything – space, surface, color, image – to create various incongruities.” Jahmal was most recently featured on the cover of the June 2019 issue of the Brooklyn Rail, where he spoke with Louis Block about his inaugural institutional solo exhibition ‘Gombo’, currently on view at the Passerelle Centre d’art Contemporain in Brest, France; the exhibition is curated by Loïc Le Gall.

Loïc Le Gall, is the Assistant Curator of the Department of Contemporary Art and Prospective of Centre Pompidou, Paris.
