Jon Key employs a strictly limited color palette in the paintings; Green, Black, Violet and Red infuse his explorations of Southernness, Blackness, Queerness, and Family. Jon’s work is both autobiographical, pulling cues from his Alabama upbringing, and speculative, investigating the spaces in which Queer people of color exist and find safety post-Orlando Pulse nightclub massacre. Layers of paint contrast visually flat compositions, and evoke scarring of the body while subtly pushing against the inherent flatness of the picture plane.
