Jack Hanley Gallery presents Leaving the House, Alain Biltereyst’s third solo show with the gallery. In this exhibition, Biltereyst continues to abstract patterns and designs from his everyday surroundings while introducing new formats and color schemes to his paintings.

Based on graphic designs from advertising, logos, and commercial signage, Biltereyst’s acrylic works on panel combine geometric abstractions with a painterly gesture. Largely in primary colors and black or white, the works reveal minimal but complex patterns that often play with optical illusions of depth and space. Their carefully calculated patterns of rectangles, lines, triangles or parallelograms stand in contrast to their free and unrestrained use of paint that leave traces of the painter’s hand in visible brushstrokes, irregularities, and underlying layers of paint that shimmer through the surface.

The seriality of their designed source materials is mirrored in their own standardized formats and imagery. Especially in the small paintings, the wood panels’ thickness underlines the paintings object-like quality. Referencing modern painting history while building his very own visual language, Biltereyst builds bridges between mass-produced quotidian designs and uniquely hand-crafted paintings.

Alain Biltereyst (b. 1965) lives and works in Belgium. Recent solo exhibitions include Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, NY, Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art, Salzburg and Albert Baronian, Brussels, Belgium. The artist also participated in group exhibitions at Barry Whistler Gallery, Joshua Liner, New York, John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco, The B&W Project #5 at Transmitter, Herentals, Belgium, Spaghetti Code at Viewing Room, Los Angeles.
