This event has ended.

In July, the gallery will feature the work of the 40 winners of the 24th annual juried National Competition.

Soho Photo Gallery’s competition attracted images from 148 photographers from across the United States. Julie Grahame, publisher of aCurator and consultant for photographers, is our competition’s distinguished juror. Julie Mihaly from Poughkeepsie, NY was selected as the 1st place winner.
First Place

Of the entries Grahame said: “It was wonderful to see so many competent, well composed, well thought-through images; and having no particular theme allows the juror to go with any flow she wishes! I am confident that each image stands up for itself, and each also plays its own important part in the final selection of forty.”

Astrid Reischwitz, Bedford, MA received 2nd place and 3rd place went to Carson Barnes, Griffin GA. Honorable Mentions were awarded to: Yong Chen, Savannah, GA, Leslie Jean-Bart, New York, NY, Bryan Ince, Hazlet, NJ and Robert Moran, Bar Harbor, ME.

B&H Event Space Portfolio Development

In the front gallery, on exhibit, is the 7th annual B&H Event Space Portfolio Development Exhibition. All other participants of the B&H group will show their work on July 31 and on August 1, with a closing reception from 6-8pm.

The six-month workshop series takes place at B&H’s Event Space located in the B&H Super Store. The series is taught by a variety of speakers including Soho Photo artists Lois Youmans and Sandra Carrion. The free workshops cover a variety of subjects, with an emphasis on preparing a portfolio for gallery submission. This year’s series repeated the added challenge of creating, not just images along a theme, but also each participant had to self-publish a photo book. Many participants flourished, taking on serious subjects and telling important stories. Previous Portfolio Development participants have gone on to win competitions, publish books and have solo shows. A budding community spawned out of the portfolio developers called the 9th Avenue Photo Collective and is adopting the lessons of the Event Space and forging ahead with their own manifesto of craft and support.
