John Custodio
On the Road: Structures

Once or twice a year I take to the road on long trips across the country, looking for interesting landscapes to photograph. In my travels I’ve noticed and photographed what, for want of a better term, could be called structures — lone buildings, towers, monuments, objects, remains of dwellings – isolated within the landscape. Some are merely functional, some are commemorative, and some are surviving remnants of what once was, but they all serve as a fascinating counterpoint to the wider expanse around them.

Transforming Window Shades

Over the last twenty years I have transformed my photographs from the real and objective to the abstract and non-objective. This new series is based on photos of textured shades from the fifth-floor windows of the Whitney Museum. Transformed in Photoshop, the shades are no longer recognizable and now assume a new life reminiscent of abstract sculptural or life forms.

Rosalie Frost
Monet’s Water Garden, Shadow and Light

In the last decades of his long life, Claude Monet was obsessed with the lush, fecund and charged atmosphere of his beloved water garden at Giverny, created by diverting the water flowing from a tributary of the Seine River. In this series, a deliberately restricted photographic palette offers a contrast to Monet’s water garden paintings, suggesting an alternative reality of luminous shadow and light.

Cultural Landscapes

Maximized panoramic vernacular landscapes – everyday landscapes – are evocative representations of what we value. They lead the viewer to consider the globalized commonality of the human experience in different places and non-places.
These works are informed by research in the field of Human Geography and in particularly in the study of the causal relationships between people and place. In geography, this is framed as a study of cultural landscape.

Stuart Zalka
Window Shopping on Mars

Inspired by a recent rereading of Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles, this project uses window mannequins, as mediated through a digital pinhole camera, to imagine these shape shifting, time shifting anthromorphs.

Contemporary Photographers Speaker Series

Meryl Meisler, photographer
Finding Gems in The Streets

Thursday, January 16 from 6 - 7:30 pm, free and open to the public

Inspired by Diane Arbus and Jacques Henri Lartigue, Meisler began photographing herself, family and friends while enrolled in a photography class at The University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 2010, Meisler began releasing large bodies of previously unseen work.
At this talk, Meisler will share images and insights from her 40-plus year archive of street-style photographs. Her second book, Purgatory & Paradise SASSY ‘70s Suburbia & The City (Bizarre, 2015), contrasts intimate images of home life on Long Island alongside New York City street and night life and will be available for signing.
