This event has ended.

1969 presents Close at Hand, an exhibition of new paintings by Keiran Brennan Hinton. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the Gallery.

Based on a three-month long residency - Brennan Hinton was the inaugural artist-in-residence at the James Castle House, a program of the Boise City Department of Arts and History – the exhibition is anchored by five significant oil paintings. Measuring 58 x 50 inches each, the canvasses offer multi-panel and improbable views of the shed where James Castle lived and worked for 30 years – and the occasional view out his window.

“Castle’s presence is palpable and still evident in the shed where he made his work,” Brennan Hinton says. “I wanted to make paintings that reconstructed what I felt inhabiting his home and studio for a full summer.”

Such an immersive experience deeply influenced Brennan Hinton, who at age 27 has been recognized already for his observational, diaristic and plein air paintings. In cooperation with the James Castle Collection and Archive, Close at Hand includes fittingly five Castle drawings, with an accompanying wall-text, by Managing Partner Jacqueline Crist, and Collection Manager Andrea Merrell.

The second suite of paintings for this exhibition reflects Brennan Hinton’s long-standing interest in space. “Architecture frequently controls a persons movement, it is often a rigid structure that determines where to stand, sit or lay” the artist says. “In these spaces I am interested in painting what is left behind, as if a person’s life could be felt in the imprinted crush of a sofa, sooty fingerprints on a shelf or a peeling pattern of wallpaper. I then mash together improbable scenes that disobey time and history, painting impossible family portraits depicting my notion of how memory and even desire function imaginatively together in a specific place.”

Keiran Brennan Hinton (b. 1992, Toronto, ON) lives and works in New York, NY. He received an MFA from Yale University and a BFA from Pratt Institute. He has had solo exhibitions at 1969 Gallery (New York, NY) and Mulherin New York (New York, NY) and has participated in group shows at include Francesco Pantaleone Arte Contemporanea (Milan, IT), Antoine Ertaskiran (Montreal, QC), and the Katonah Museum of Art (Katonah, NY), among others. Brennan Hinton was recently the inaugural artist-in-residence at the James Castle House, and a finalist in the 2018 RBC Canadian Painting Competition in Toronto, ON.
