This event has ended.

Agora Gallery presents A Rich Profusion of Spring, an exhibition of paintings and sculptures.

Spring invigorates. April is conventionally associated birth and new life; and yet, at T.S. Eliot once remarked, “April is the cruelest month.” The 13 artists included in this exhibition all explore the fecundity of their medium (be it a watercolor work, a sculpture, or a painting in oils); but they everywhere encounter limits. These limits call into question the value their chosen craft. In the face of restlessness and doubt, however, these 13 artists dauntlessly capture the energy artists use to realize an artwork into life.

The works on view show the human figure as something effaced, concealed, even denatured. In the teeth of this, the elegance of human ingenuity becomes all the more apparent. Glimpses become certitudes; conviction becomes truth. Featuring domestic interiors, craggy landscapes, and urban vistas, the attitude each artist takes in relation to his or her theme is one of disinterested contemplation. Oftentimes, there is no observer suggested by the work—apart from the viewer herself who looks at it. This kind of objectivity showcases the limits of art, which exists only in the eye of the beholder.
