Pace Prints presents an exhibition of editions and monoprints by Pat Steir at its 32 East 57th Street gallery, on view November 14 - December 20, 2019. The exhibition, featuring work from the last 20 years, will run concurrent with Pat Steir: Color Wheel at the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.

Pat Steir’s painting has evolved over the last 50 years into a recognizable corpus of abstract images, often evoking landscapes and, most famously, waterfalls. An element of chance is key to the artist’s work. Steir allows the paint to inherently move and, though she adjusts the work, she often lets the paint determine the energy of her compositions. Over her career as a printmaker, Steir has developed a personal approach to making both editions and unique prints that reflect this painting practice.

Many of the works in this exhibition are hand-painted monoprints. After collaborating with the printmakers to create unique combinations of screenprinted layers, Steir works on the prints in the same way she creates her paintings. The printed images are hung on the studio wall and as she paints, dripping and flinging the paint across the surface, she allows chance and time to determine much of the outcome of each piece. In Steir’s monoprints, the unpredictable marks and the artist’s brushstrokes complete the image. Pace Prints will present a selection of these monoprints alongside editions spanning the last 20 years of the artist’s practice.

Pat Steir was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1940. She received a BFA from Pratt Institute in 1961. The artist’s paintings, prints and wall drawings have been the subject of over 150 solo exhibitions internationally, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, The Brooklyn Museum, Musée d’Art Moderne and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Steir has been making prints with Pace Editions since 1991. She lives and works in New York City.
