Fergus McCaffrey presents all; at once, a solo exhibition of works by American artist Richard Nonas on view at the gallery’s New York location. Marking his sixth solo exhibition at the gallery since 2013, the exhibition features steel drawings and sculpture that occupy the first and second floors of the gallery.
Place, the hubris of place, with its intemperate wedging of human meaning into an indifferent physical world, is what is at stake for Nonas. Every built arrangement is a potential rearrangement, every making is a remaking. His formal constructions critique and push at the space they are in. For Nonas, power lies in the contraction and expansion of space, in the conflict between clarity and confusion, in the attempt to make place hold fast.
