Alex Hay & Ryan Foerster “2 benches”

The National Exemplar

poster for Alex Hay & Ryan Foerster “2 benches”

This event has ended.

Alex Hay started making furniture in Bisbee, Arizona in the 1970s before he set up his painting studio there because he wanted a chair to lean back in. Eventually they evolved into “rocking benches” with two center points on either side on which they stand upright, and two sets of shorter points in the front and back of those, that allow the sitter to rock. Each position has four points of contact with the floor. They were made out of vertical grain spruce wood which was available in Tucson at the time.

For Ryan Foerster the benches are an ongoing project started with his grandfather Clarence Turner in 2010. On a visit to Sundbury, Ontario for the summer they made some benches together.

There is a book documenting all the benches made over the years.

The benches he made are out of found wood and debris, and other broken benches found around his studio in Tribecaand around his house Brighton Beach, New York. They are meant to be sat on, even if they are showed sometimes at galleries as sculptures.
