This event has ended.

Marlborough Gallery presents an exhibition of recent works by the contemporary Spanish painter Abraham Lacalle.

The exhibition is comprised of Lacalle’s large format landscapes in watercolor and oil that orchestrate a very
singularly charged and sumptuous palette. Despite their vivid colors, these scenes are imbued with a palpable sense
of desolation – they are not the paradisiac landscapes that their tone and intense coloration would otherwise
convey. What one often finds in these landscapes are the remnants of human imprint, of trauma, which becomes
slowly reclaimed by lush nature: in Doble curva, 2018, for example, Lacalle has delicately placed a knife upright
on its sharp point, resting on a log and surrounded by blossoming trees. Such quietly provocative juxtapositions can be found in each of the exhibited works. Lacalle’s recent paintings are disconcerting visions of our acute contemporary culture of consumption and ennui, that perhaps seek, or evince, the innate but often elusive harmony of nature.
Born in Almería, Spain, in 1962, Lacalle began his career in the late 1980s. The artist has been showing with Marlborough since 2002 and has since held solo exhibitions at museums across Spain, most notably his landmark 2005 exhibition, Abraham Lacalle, Un lugar donde nunca sucede nada (A Place Where Nothing Happens) at the renowned Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain.

Lacalle’s work is part of numerous and important museum collections in Spain, such as: Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo, Palma, Mallorca; Colección Santander, Madrid; and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, among others.
