This event has ended.

Sla307 presents a solo exhibition of new works by Berlin artist Ria Patricia Röder entitled #chainofaction. This is Röder’s first solo show in New York City. On display are photographic works of her recent scanogram series ALL WORK AND NO PLAY.

In her scanogram series Ria Patricia Röder creates photographic collages by bringing together a distinct variety of pictorial elements on a scanner screen.

Her surprising and intimate imagery arises from a complex process of questioning different forms of depiction. The carefully arranged compositions consist of real objects from our everyday surroundings and their photographic representation, undergoing a digestional process of printing, deformation, re-photographing, re-printing, resulting in one final scan exposure without further digital manipulation. By chosing the scanner as an image processing device Röder makes us think of airport X-RAY-apparatuses putting emphasis on the uniqueness of the moment of exposure. Unlike the slickness of advertising photography the images have a peculiar quality to them being printed on a heavy matte paper questioning the boundaries between photography, painting and object.

Drawing inspiration from literature and film Ria Patricia Röder is interested in the term of ‘microfiction’ as established by writers like Lydia Davis. Like personal memories, Röder´s ‘pictorial poems’ appear to be fluid and fragmentary, bearing however a strong narrative potential. In the end, they subversively undermine our consensus of a coherent, valid world view and challenge us to become pro-active.
