This event has ended.

Tenri Cultural Institute presents the solo exhibition of Toshihiro Sakuma. “Healing” is a series of works that began in 1993 with an installation depicting Sakuma’s family tree. He emphasized life, warmth, and spirit through incorporating ordinary household products, such as light bulbs, vinyl sheets, futons, furniture and door plates, and dimming the light bulbs to create different dimensions in the work. After the initial installment was completed, he worked on additional series which explored the same themes of “life.” Sakuma decided to revisit his first series, “Healing” in 2012, after the natural disaster in Japan impacted Sakuma’s hometown. He reflected about the many lives that were lost and thought how they continue to “exist” as memories, but not as “life.” Therefore, the new installation on display at Tenri Cultural Institute has a theme of “existence.” Although inspired by the natural disaster, “Healing” was created with a more universal perspective that also considers the harshness of “existence.”
