Time Equities Inc. Art-in-Buildings presents the newest exhibition at the West 10th Window: Nooshin Rostami, Corner of my room.
Nooshin Rostami works predominantly in performance, installation, and sculpture, manipulating abstract forms into an amalgam of objects examining personal, social, and political narratives. Born in Iran, Rostami immigrated to the United States to pursue her graduate studies, but soon found herself in a place of exile, uncertain of her ability to return to her home country due to a single-entry visa. In response to her displacement, she began to create visions of ever changing landscapes within confined territories.
In her site-specific installation Corner of my room at the West 10th Window, Rostami examines these visions of landscape through a multigenerational lens. Acting in conversation with a sister solo exhibition at Trestle gallery the alleyway to the prison’s garden, and inspired by an interview the artist conducted with her parents in which Rostami showed them a series of videos displaying plains of reflective film that shift light over folded steel sculpture, each exhibition space individually reflects on one parent’s interpretation of an imagined place. Corner of my room at the West 10th Window is Rostami’s mother’s imagining of the corner of a room, while The alleyway to the prison’s garden examines her father’s understanding of the forms as a desert reminiscent of where he grew up. Both installations are rooted in the artist’s and her parents’ recollections of memories combined with imagined landscapes of a future. Recreating the sculptural form and overlaid plains of reflective film from her videos in the West 10th Window, the mirrored surface of the film responds to sunlight streaming through the glass, activating the installation to create soft, fragmented waves that emulate an ocean and shift over the course of the day. An audio component plays fragments from Rostami’s interview with her mother. Corner of my room changes the viewer’s perception of space, exploring the relationship between structural and liquefied forms to examine the relationship between paradoxical concepts: stable versus uncertain, controlled versus unruled, and static versus fluid.
Nooshin Rostami is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist and educator born in Shahroud, Iran. She has exhibited widely and presented her work in solo and group settings in Austria, Canada, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and the United States. Her work has been featured in a number of publications such as Jadaliyya and Ajam Media Collective. She has participated in residencies both locally and internationally such as BRIC, NARS Foundation, and Tifa working studios.
